Pamunkey Point on Lake Anna

Pamunkey Point is the name of the area on the south side of the northwestern reach of Lake Anna, formerly the Pamunkey Creek along the Orange and Spotsylvania boundaries. The name originated from one of the groups of Native Americans in the Tidewater area of Virginia that had existed for many hundreds of years according to state anthropologists. The name was later assigned to the Creek and River flowing southeasterly to the Chesapeake Bay.

The Pamunkey Point Subdivision is a contiguous group of 51 parcels. Four of the parcels are located in Orange County, Virginia; the remainder is in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Its northern shoreline borders Lake Anna on the south side of what is now the northwestern tributary of Lake Anna.

In 1971, Dominion Power completed construction of a 90 foot high dam on the North Anna River, northwest of Richmond, Virginia and south of the confluence with the Pamunkey Creek. The dam formed Lake Anna and filled to its present level in the early seventies.

Pamunkey Point is located on the west side of Virginia Route 522 where it crosses the Pamunkey Bridge over Lake Anna. The Pamunkey River south of the Lake Anna dam is recognized nationally for kayaking and canoeing. The lake area on the north shore of Pamunkey Point is ideal for canoeing or kayaking. The area contains a lot of structure and two water sources, including the Pamunkey Creek – ideal for spring and fall fishing for stripers, walleye and largemouth bass.

Lake Anna has two areas, separated by four dykes. The private, or warm side, is dedicated to the Dominion Power Plant cooling function. The cooler side, also known as the public side, is approximately 7 degrees cooler and much larger and deeper. Pamunkey Point is located on the public side, with 28 waterfront lots with dedicated areas on each lot set aside for private docks and/or boat houses. It also has 23 interior lots with deeded boat slips in a common area assigned to each lot.
